So today I found a stray dog with a collar, so I thought to myself, "I might as well return her to her owner". I don't have any place to keep the dog, so I take her across town to the address on her collar and knock on their door, but no response. So I text the owner and stick the dog in the backyard. End of story, right? Nope. The dog somehow makes an Olympic sized jump over the fence, and bolts away. Soon after, the owner texts me back and I find out that I took the dog to their old address, so now the dog is now not only lost, but also somewhere on the other side of town. So I now feel super shitty..

Am I at fault guys?

...did you try calling the owner's number, or just texting?

Nope. Their fault for not updating their dog's tags.

Kind of you to try and help, but their dog, their responsibility.

No, you did what you could with the information available. It is the owners responsibility to keep track of his dog.

No it's the owners fault for:

1. Letting the Dog out in the first place

2. Not updating the tag on the Dog's collar.

You did what you could with what information you had. Most people would not have gone as far as you did. Proof that there are still good people in this world. It's just too bad that the owner didn't update the dog's tags.

Just throwing my vote in for "No, totally the owner's fault in every way."

Gotta update the tags and keep track of the dog. I would have done the same as you.

It didn't happen to be a white dog, did it?

Fair enough. In that case, completely not at fault. You did what you could with what you had.

Yeah, I just feel stupid. The one time I try doing something nice, and it backfires horribly.

Thanks, for the reassurance. I'm kind of wary of picking up/returning random collared dogs now. The last time I returned a dog it shat on the carpet of my car. Not a good experience.

Next time, I'd make voice contact with the owner, confirm the address to return their dog to, or take it to yours/ a friend's place and tell the owner where the dog is located.

Most care enough to come get it very quickly. Those who can't be bothered should be told that you will call animal control with X hours (48?) and they can take it up with them after that.

You're a good person. Like other said, owner's fault for not updating tag.

Don't feel stupid. I mean it could have been much worse. I have some friends that are big time dog lovers who would all say you did the right thing.
